What's Next On The Menu: Cinnamon Pull Apart (@ Cupcake)

"What's Next On The Menu" is a section to the site that I've been sitting on since the relaunch. Anyone that knows me, or notices my check-ins on Four Square, should be aware that my other passion besides Music and Old School Marvel Comics is Food. I put a lot of time, actually entirely too much, in thinking about food; what to eat, where to eat, who will be there while I'm eating it, etc... Time spent is just one part of it, let's not even get started on the financial side of it. I once tallied up my food bills on my bank statements for a year while doing taxes and I seem to recall it rivaling all other expenses or something to that effect.

In any event, I also love to cook too. As much as time permits, I enjoy trying to cook new meals, making up my own recipes, and recently developed a passion for baking. "What's Next On The Menu" will be an all-out exploration of restaurants, shopping for food, cooking in the kitchen, sharing recipes, meeting chefs, and all sorts of tasty stuff.

Being that I have spent my writing "career" (for lack of more appropriate word), dating back to 1992, limited to pretty much writing about Hip Hop*, I figured I needed to start preparing myself to write and further develop my language and personality in talking about food. I wrote this article below a couple months ago and have been sitting on it... Enjoy!

I’m obsessed with Cinnamon Rolls. Seriously, when I think about dessert, which I do every day, my first thoughts are always Cupcakes and Cinnamon Rolls**…

Even knowing that, couldn’t prepare me for today. I rushed out to Cupcake in the their final hour before closing for a “needed” snack. However, when I arrived, being it was the end of the day, they didn’t have any of the half dozen or so Cupcakes that I had been daydreaming of thru out the day, which inspired the mission. Teetering between sadness and creative selection, I glanced upwards into the constraints of the glass case to notice the Cinnamon Pull Apart.

Viewing it gave obvious clues to it’s basic essence, so it felt silly to ask the young lady behind the counter what it was, but I just wanted to hear her say it, as if to ramp up the anticipation, “It’s croissant dough baked with butter, cinnamon and sugar”…is what I think she said, the words were a bit secondary to the mental picture I was forming. “Yeah (as in, obviously), give me one of those”, I said.

It was perfectly soft with some scattered crunchy parts. One such crunch revealed itself to be a hardened clump of pure cinnamon sugar. Rarely has my expression gone from unexpected alarm to gleaming smile.

With each sweet loving bite it was becoming obvious that good judgment had no intentions of intervening to prevent me from picking up that pasty cup and pouring the remaining cinnamon sugar down my throat. Luckily, fate stepped in and ill applied pressure to the car brakes sent it tumbling to the floor. As I witnessed it, I simultaneously felt thwarted and relived…no one needs that kind of sugar shock.

My short but satisfying love affair with my Cinnamon Pull Apart came to story-book ending when I picked the wrapper off the car floor and closed it in a fist to toss it away and the left-over cinnamon sugar contents exploded like fairy dust all around me and all I could think was, “Magical”…Yeah, that about describes it.

-But honestly, you should just go there they have lots of tasty awesomeness:

*With the exception of the detailed Life Journals I keep from about age 15 to 30 or so. And my infamous entries in my past job's Manager logs, outlining ridiculous customer interactions, which my co-workers/bosses seemed to love...or hate.

**Thought I admit I have a hard-time finding the "perfect" Cinnamon Roll. Suggestions
wanted, preferably not with Cream Cheese frosting...not a fan.
